This is the first time in eight years the sun is not shining on this day. The sky is not a bright, clear blue. The temperature is not a crisp, 70-something degrees. Instead, today is blustery and cool. There is a tornado watch in parts of New Jersey. It is raining.

It was a perfectly clear blue skied morning here in Chicago, just like in 2001. I woke up and looked out the kitchen window just as an airplane was coming in for a landing - we live close enough to a flight pattern that sometimes they come pretty close to our house. I stood in the window and stared at the underside of the plane as it crossed the airspace above me and remembered the days and weeks following the events of 2001, when there were no aircraft flying above our house at all. The silence was deafening.
